Overview

Located in an open space near Denver, Colorado, this building hosts 4 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. It was designed to be a passive house and net zero. Solar panels, a small mini split system, ERV, and a highly insulated wall system promoted a high-performance building envelope. Southern-facing windows encouraged solar gain which would be circulated throughout the house. Shading would block any harsh sunlight during the summer but allow for warmth in the winter.

This passive-inspired house was influenced by the beautiful Robbie House’s pure lines and smooth forms. In terms of the program, the basement allows visitors or older family members to have their own space within the house, while the main floor brings everyone together. On the main level, two solid, stone masses indicate the entrance, which is enclosed by a cantilevered shade for safety from the weather. A shading structure protrudes from the south side of the building to provide shading over the large sliding doors as well as the interstitial space between the inside and outside living spaces. The dining, living and kitchen all have direct access to the outside to host parties or connect back to the land around them.

The second floor hosts solar panels and outdoor decks. These more private areas are for the users to retreat from their hectic day and relax. The master bedroom has direct access to a moon deck where one can gaze up at the gorgeous Colorado sky.
