Architecture and AI
Recently the topic of Artificial Intelligence has worked its way into almost all conversations, Architecture is no exception. Whether its Midjourney for visualization or Finch3d for space optimization, the practice of architecture will be dramatically changed in the near future. Theories on the impact of AI to the architecture field range from complete and total obsoletion of the Architect, to aiding the Architect in a new, limitless imagination of form.
Tools such as Midjourney allow for imputation of prompts to quickly visualize ideas, and could be possibly used as another way of “sketching” the idea. Much like the process of sketching, the output from these prompts help to convey the idea or feeling of the project. Helping the client and Architects to understand the final product.
With a product like Finch3d, optimization for everything from plan layouts and circulation, to daylighting and energy consumption is streamlined. Using AI, the time at which different iterations of schematic designs can be explored is greatly reduced and optimal designs can be found quickly.
Repercussions of these tools can be understood in terms of increased productivity for individuals or teams. We’re looking forward to seeing the short term, and long term effects of AI in architecture!
